Gaming and Motivation Lesson Plan

"Save the Christians"

Pacing:
Each player will move as fast as possible; total time for game 60 minutes, which will give each player 15 minutes each to complete their task. Each player will throw a dice to see who gets the highest number; the highest number will go first. The game will not be played in teams.

Instructions:
Each player will be given a written set of instruction 15 minutes before the game; they will keep the instructions throughout the game. In addition, the instruction will be read orally before the game. The players will be given 10 minutes to ask question.

Controls:
The players will have control over how much time they use. They do not have control over any players, or their time. There is no randomization of play.

Knowledge:
The players will know how many minutes are in the game, and long they will have to complete the task. The players will know after the game how important it is to know the scriptures word for word. The players will know that there are 25 Christians in prison that need to be free.

Achievements:
The big goal is to save the Christians from the lions. Rewards will be given in the form of tokens and a trip to the Holy Land. The Christians will be punished if the players do not know the scriptures.

Story:
Save the Christians:

Each player will go into the village where they will find a group of Christians lock in prison waiting to be eaten by the angry lions. The players will be asked by the jailer to quote a random scripture from the bible in order to free a Christian. The player will be given five chances; to free 5 Christians. For each Christian freed, the player will receive 100 tokens. The player with the most tokens at the end of the game will receive a ticket to the Holy Land.

Endgame:
The final outcome is to free all 25 Christians from prison and the angry lions, and to present a trip to the winner.

Each player will have a greater value for being able to quote the scriptures verbatim. There will be 4 losers and one winner.

Assessment:
The players will be measured in performance by how many scriptures they are able to memorize and quote. We will know if the player is winning by how many tokens they have accumulated and how many Christians they have freed. The winner will have the most tokens.

Timing:
Each player will have fifteen minutes to free at least 5 Christians. Each player can move at any speed to get the task complete.  Each player will throw a dice to see who will get the highest score. The highest score will go first. The game will not be played in teams.

Why is the Game Fun and Motivational?
The game is fun and motivational because it connects with the bible. Each player will learn how valuable it is to know the scriptures and the power connected. Any one with or without bible knowledge will have fun playing this game, for it is the thrill of using knowledge to free someone from death. The learner must be enticed to put in lots of effort even if he or she be- gins with little motivation to do so. The learner must achieve some meaningful success when he or she has expended this effort.
(Gee 2003).

What Operant Conditions are in Place?
There is a lack of consequences; therefore, there are no results from behavior.

What motivational theory does the lesson address?

Incentive Theory – when one is motivated to do things because of external rewards and a small amount of Instinct Theory – fear.

WK3 Capstone Blog:

The Texas State Teachers Association employs me as an “Organizing Developmental Specialist,” and part of my job description is to provide “Professional Development Courses” for the teachers within our association. If I had to choose between technology, and innovation in the workplace, it would be the implementation of technology. I would use Udutu.

Udutu is an online course-authoring tool used to build interactive quizzes; complex assignment; and all major types of graphic, sound, and video formats optimize automatically for web delivery. For example, a robust multimedia corporate training, and development program can be up and running in 3 to 4 weeks. The authoring tool also extracts a .zip file that integrates seamlessly with SCORM compliant LMS, and most of all it can be done with no technical knowledge. (Udutu Community Forums)

Another feature of Udutu is “Udutu Teach,” which allows you to import courses from myUdutu into Facebook and other Social Networks as Learning Management Systems (LMS, LCMS) and retain all the rich communication and scheduling tools that these applications offer. (Udutu Community Forums)

Lastly, the software can be used an eLearning solution. Training programs can be customized and delivered on-site to meet training needs. Udutu will provide:
1.     Operations Training
2.     Regulatory Training
3.     Performance Management

The implementation of Udutu into our workplace would make training so much easier and efficient; thus cutting the cost of training in the field and the Home Office.

Udutu is a great Web Site to gain information about Udutu online course authoring. (www.udutu.com/products.html)
